A friend of mine who lives in the Northampton diocese in England has forwarded me this link to a report by the BBC’s local radio station on the news that Chesterton might be on the path to canonization:

It is gratifying to see Chesterton’s cause getting news coverage in his own neck of the English woods but such coverage does not alter the fact that Chesterton, who prophesied most of the ills that are killing England, is sadly neglected in this native land. It is safe to assume that for every copy of a Chesterton book that is purchased and read in England, a hundred are purchased and read in the United States.

Ultimately none of this really matters too much, or at least it needs to be seen in perspective. Chesterton has successfully fulfilled the quest. He spent his life loving God and neighbor and has now received his heavenly reward. This is the meaning of human life. Chesterton knew it, taught it, preached it, wrote about it, but most of all lived it.

G. K. Chesterton, the apostle of common sense, pray for us and pray for England.
