William Fahey, president of Thomas More College of the Liberal Arts, has publicly confessed the end of an affair. I should explain, lest unbecoming rumours are unleashed, that the affair he confesses does not involve a mortal sin. I’ll say no more but will encourage you to read his excellent essay: http://www.crisismagazine.com/2012/the-end-of-the-affair
The affair is a temptation for writers as well as readers. I don’t think Graham Greene (one of my favorite writers) would take its title amiss at all, but would likely agree with Fahey.Thank you for sharing the essay. It’s as lovely as it is relevant.
“And the wondrous thing was this: she did not just read what was in front of her; no, she chanted and sang from memory”–yes! Ah, lovely…
The essay is great. I think the ending of the affair is peaceful. I try to imagine the girl as quiet and simple lady who loves reading a lot.
