For centuries, English revisionist history has propagandized events during the Tudor dynasty to justify its guilt-ridden hatred of the Catholic Church. That history has not affected only the country itself but the United States as well, descended in English bigotry as it is, to the point where an American film producer has only to portray a man in a monk’s robe to suggest villainy. Now, with the coming papal visit to that country, the Catholic-haters have been having a field day. An author who’s grown weary of the nonsense has pointed out an inconvenient truth or two:
I’m reminded of the recent Elizabeth movie which featured the sinking of the Spanish Rosary, oops, I mean Armada.
She harrassed Spain unbelievably for twelve years before she finally succeeding in goading Phillip into war. She had sent “private” buccaneers to raid Spanish colonies and ships, wantonly killing the natives. She sent English ships to raid the Spanish coast many times. It was hard work getting Spain to react. Phillip did not want war.
But the film exists so that Kate Blanchett can stand on a cliff in armor and talk tough in “defense” of her country against an evil Catholic invasion.
