A friend sent me the website of a priest in England. Fr. Simon Henry (who has posted here on the Ink Desk before, I believe) recently celebrated the twenty-second anniversary of his ordination and made this post on his own blog:

He talks about how his love of beauty was found suspect when he was in seminary.

Nowhere is the voice of Satan more discernible than in a condemnation of beauty. I’ve learned to beware that voice as a spiritual poison—especially when it issues from a Catholic mouth. The contempt/disdain/hatred (it’s a matter of degree, not of kind) of beauty has its origin in the Puritans’ hatred for the Church. When it finds expression within the Church herself, its destructive power is increased exponentially.
