For some inconceivable reason I ascribed the composition of The Dream of Gerontius to Britten and not Elgar, though I was obviously aware that the latter wrote it. I’ve been puzzling over the reason for the error and think perhaps it’s because I’ve been thinking about Britten’s Anthem for Doomed Youth, an adaptation of a poem by Wilfred Owen that I’m teaching in my Twentieth Century Class at Ave Maria University. This is one of the pitfalls of journalism, as distinct from academic writing, which involves writing in haste for an invariably imminent deadline. C’est la vie!
