I’ve been sent the link to a truly welcome website. It lists all the known pubs, bars and restaurants in the United States and Canada that serve cask-conditioned ale. This is a site that will whet the appetite of any Englishman in exile or any American who knows a good pint of ale when he tastes one. For the importance and relevance of real ale to real culture (and real ale is, literally, real culture), we need only read the works of Chesterton and Belloc. I would particularly recommend Belloc’s “Four Men” in this regard. For those interested in its importance to the subsidiarist vision of society as envisioned by the social teaching of the Church, I would suggest the reading of the chapter on “Small Beer” in my book “Small is Still Beautiful”.
