A friend has sent me an article published this week in the Oxford Mail, a local newspaper in England, in which it is disclosed that two previously unpublished poems by J. R. R. Tolkien have been discovered in a school magazine in Oxfordshire. The poems were both published in 1936, a year before the publication of The Hobbit. One is entitled “The Shadow Man”, which evokes the mythical world of Middle-earth; the other is a Christmas poem, entitled “Noel”. The latter is a pious outpouring of Tolkien’s deep Christian faith and his love for Christ and Our Lady:
