A friend in California has forwarded me a link to a wonderful lecture given at Houston Baptist University by Professor Jerry Walls. The title of his lecture is “C. S. Lewis on why our souls demand purgatory”. Last year I found myself in hot water when I made exactly the same point during a lecture on Lewis’ Great Divorce at a C. S. Lewis Conference, also in Texas. I told those in the audience who were angered by the notion of purgatory that their argument is with C. S. Lewis, not with me. I was merely pointing out that The Great Divorce takes place in the purgatorial ante-chamber of Heaven.
