Lies, Damned Lies and Media Reporting of the Catholic Church
His recent ignorant attack on The Lord of the Rings notwithstanding, Tim Stanley is a rare voice of courage and sanity in the UK’s media. Here he unravels the unconsionable lies of the mainstream media:
I’m glad he gave examples on both sides of the Atlantic. The U.S. bigotry is as bad as the U.K.’s. The difference is only a matter of demographic variables, and perhaps a general tendency among the English to grab hold of scandal as a dog grabs a bone. Americans, for all our faults, do not seem to have the addiction to scandal that runs so rampant among the English. It’s their daily bread. Americans bore too easily for that.
Regarding journalists. There’s no connection. I’ve come to see “media” as way too inclusive a term. There are journalists and then there are scandalmongers. The latter make a living by understanding their audience, just as the former make a living by understanding theirs. The scandalmongers are not interested in facts–they don’t have to be. Their audience doesn’t care about facts, so why should they? On the other hand, journalists check the facts–they know they have to because their audience demands it.
I’m afraid the same explanation applies to “media” that applies to all other areas of both public and private life. While I have contempt for those who make a living by dishing out garbage, I don’t blame them as much as I blame those whose appetite for garbage keeps them in business.
