No, the heading to this post does not indicate my embrace of the relativist mantra that “this above all: to thine own self be true”. Only one of the me’s is in fact me; the other is Maine, the New England state. Last week, during my latest sojourn in New England teaching at Thomas More College, I gave a couple of talks in Portsmouth, NH. Being informed that the state of Maine was on the other side of the river, I asked to be driven across the bridge so that I could add the state of Maine to the lengthening list of states that I have visited. I have now set foot in forty-one of the contiguous states, albeit only for the briefest of moments in one or two cases!
