A friend has just sent me the link to an article in the Guardian announcing the showing of the Siegfried Sassoon archive in Cambridge. Sassoon is indubitably one of the finest poets of the twentieth century, and not simply for the war poems for which he is best known. His religious poetry, especially that wiitten after his conversion to Catholicism in 1957, is positively sublime, though scandalously neglected by today’s secular culture.
