Yes, I remember reading thus interview before, it was pretty good.
And yes, I remember that website, I used to visit it often, but as much as I like and admire Brad Birzer, the site is very classical liberal, and I find myself leaning more and more in the direction of traditionalism, or continental conservatism, or whatever you want to call it. Look, just give me back my Church, my King, and my Christendom and I’ll be happy, honest.
Speaking of Mr. Birzer…I will repost what he said in the comment section:
“I think it’s nearly criminal that Joe is not the most famous biographer in America. Someday, future generations will look back and see that he was one of Christendom’s greatest treasures.”
WOW! That is quite the compliment Mr. Pearce! And coming from Mr. Birzer, who is no light weight biographer himself (his Tolkien and Dawson bios were some of the best I’ve ever read on those men), that is saying something!
FWIW, I would have to concur with good Mr. Birzer, you really are one of the better biographers out there today. Birzer hits the bullseye dead on with this bit: “Obviously, he’s a great writer. His best strength, though, is that he gets into the mind and soul of his subject, thus treating them not as an objective thing to be manipulated but as a fully realized human person made in the Image of God.”
How many other biographers do that today? Not many, not many at all.
My thanks to you Mr. Pearce, for the great and illuminating work you do!
RC, Thanks so much for your kind and encouraging comments about my work. I am indeed flattered by Brad Birzer’s assessment of my merits and by your endorsement of it!
Incidentally your point about “classical liberalism” is well taken. My acceptance of the invitation to join the team at the Imaginative Conservative should not imply total endorsement of everything else on the site, nor should it be taken to infer that I have watered down my own trad-oriented Catholic political philosophy.
