Dear Joseph,
We at The Distributist Review are also promoting Mr. Ferrara’s book, “The Church and the Libertarian” which we believe is a soup-to-nuts expose about Austrian economics and its incompatibility with Catholic Social Teaching.
Hey thanks, this is terrific. The word ‘distributism’ has always sounded to me like an ameliorative way of saying ‘handout,’ i.e., I work, and those less inclined to work vote for the government to take a slice of my pie.
Ferrara’s elaboration is very clarifying. I was particularly taken with his references to having one’s own computer, and seceding from the economic beast. In my case, both my wife and I lead very small lives, and are what another writer called “symbolic analysts.” In our case that means we stay close to home, keep our own hours, and have enormous control over how and when we work, in return for a less-than-affluent “lifestyle.” We have for the last 15 years or so referred to ourselves and our family as ‘secessionist,’ only gradually realizing that other Americans are thinking and living much as we are.
I believe that E. Michael Jones is working on a similar book
Chris Ferrara is absolutely right, it is time someone promoted Catholic economics, it is time someone talked sense about economic issues. Laissez Faire, Libertarian capitalism is collapsing just as communist economics collapsed. Now Thomas Woods is a very intelligent person and yet he has succombed to the siren song of Libertarianism. I don’t understand how anyone with any sense can’t see thru Libertarianism. To make a god of the “market” is madness.
Mr. Ferrara goes about erecting straw men and then knocking them down in “righteous indignation.” His caricature of Austrian Economics and individuals, whom Ferrara doesn’t name but attacks through guilt by association, such as Wilhelm Ropke is little more than a projection of the “Libertarian” he attacks in that video.
I have no patience for anyone who sees nothing but evil in those with whom one disagrees.
Furthermore, concerning “Sunday Closing Laws”, why is it so outrageous to balk at using the State to enforce a particular expression of Catholic teaching? If Catholics want to keep a day holy and free of business, they are free to do so and free to urge others to follow their example. Using the State to legislate the matter forces everyone to follow the Church’s teaching on this matter. If the State can force a business to close on Sunday, why not force a business to close on Friday, which is, after all, is the Islamic day of worship. Or Saturday, which is certain Protestant sects holy day.
There is much to appreciate in Distributism, just as there is much to appreciate in Austrian economic thinking. Rather that screaming at each other’s straw men out of “righteous indignation” why not reach out in charity and forgiveness with the idea that this person might have something to teach me. In that way, each might learn from the other. Mr. Ferrara’s way strikes me an excellent path toward entrenched opposing camps that do little more than lob verbal assaults at each other.

Hi,
About 4 years ago I was engaged, and bought a Angel Sanchez dress, which was 5000. I broke off the engagement, because we simply were not ready and are not together anymore. I recently got engaged to the love of my life and now planning our wedding. I have this dress still and not sure if its correct to wear a dress I picked for another wedding. I love the dress, but is it weird? Lemmie know what you think, I am in need of some opinions! Thank you in advance!

I made sure to read Woods before I purchased a copy of Mr. Ferrara’s book, something I would recommend others to do. I used to have a high opinion of Mr. Ferrara’s writing, but this book is mere rant that never gets anywhere. For instance, I do believe that there is such a thing as usury, which Mr. Woods calls into doubt. However, to define usury as charging interest without a just title, as Mr. Ferrara does, merely begs the question of wherein the injustice of usury lies – and therefore what its essence is. Mr. Woods demonstrates pretty clearly that the inherited definitions of usury at the very least seem to be missing a crucial element. But Mr. Ferrara thinks it sufficient to give an empty lawyer’s definition instead of a philosophical one, which shows how little he has really thought about the subject. Woods raises insightful problems, many of which he himself has not adequately resolved, but he deserves a constructive engagement, not the screeching anathemas of Mr. Ferrara. The crowd over at the Remnant, now that we traditional Catholics have the Mass back, seem to be thrashing about for enemies. Their sustained vendetta against Woods tells me that they have already spoken all the lines in their script, but don’t want to leave the stage yet. At any rate, I agree with another reviewer that it is largely a straw man that Mr. Ferrara attacks. Austrian economics and Libertarianism are not identical. Though Ferrara possesses a wicked pen and a polished rhetoric, his book produces much more heat than light.
