I’ve been meaning to write something about the recent riots in English cities but have not had the stomach to do so. They were sickening, not least because they were sickeningly predictable to all who have eyes to see. There are, however, none so blind as British politicians and British journalists.
The whole situation was summarized with succinct brilliance by a friend of mine in England. His few words say it all:
“The riots have been a real shock, but I fear too late (RC and CE bishops irrelevant and useless as usual – only interested in attacking greed when its bankers, not when its hoodies). Papers around the world have been remarking on the rapid and shocking decline of British society in just two generations. Almost a textbook example of How to Destroy a Culture – strip it of its history, faith, education system, social institutions and national identity until all that’s left is the almighty state.”
Watching these disturbances has been truly demoralizing. Sadly, I think the US is not far behind – witness the “flash-mob” problems that have plagued so many cities this summer (notwithstanding severe underreporting in the dominant media).
So-called solutions proffered by politicos and think tanks are all wide of the mark because they are blind to the proximate causes listed above – essentially a culture that is deracinated and infected by secular fundamentalism.
“There are, however, none so blind as British politicians and British journalists.”
As I said in my own post on this subject, it is a country without mirrors.
