The new film, There Be Dragons, released worldwide next week, is a must-see for serious Catholics. Based on a true story and set against the murderous backdrop of the Spanish Civil War and the role of St. José Maria Escriva and Opus Dei during those turbulent times, it’s a veritable breath of fresh air amidst the stench of Hollywood’s secularist agenda. Joseph,
I appreciate your being kind to a well-intentioned Catholic film, but think that you’re also editor of a magazine that’s supposed to stand for high aesthetic standards. I went to watch a screening of the film and pretty much everyone there was quite dismayed by how they managed to botch this up. See Simcha Fisher’s blog. I agree whole heartedly with what she says there. You need to have standards or otherwise when you say something is good everyone will think that you are only boosting it because it agrees with your worldview. And that’s what you have me believing now. Honestly, I *really* wanted this film to work, but it’s a mess and the fact that it’s Catholic not only does not excuse that, but makes it worse. If StAR is serious about building a richer culture that benefits fromt he wealth of the Catholic tradition, it’s going to have to hold Catholics accountable for not producing such embarrassments. Sure, there *are* some good, powerful moments in the film, but the whole of it is ruined by everything they get wront.
This weekend a mob of Catholics will be watching it together at a special showing. Tickets were on sale at a table outside Mass this weekend.
