As you correctly point out, the enormous power of big business – including big media – and big government brought undue influence to bear to obtain a “no” vote, but even the relatively few voices in favor of independence for Scotland cited economic concerns, a desire to withdraw from NATO’s nuclear network and the desire for a increased government programs that would secure generous health and societal benefits.
While there will be great pressure to suppress and marginalize subsequent independence movements, I believe the grass roots desire to cast off the global bureaucrats will grow even stronger in the years to come, not only in Catalonia, but in places like Holland, Venice, Quebec and, dare I say, even the US.
