I’ve received an e-mail from someone asking about my favourite books before I began to turn my heart and head towards Christ and His Church. Here’s my response:

You are asking for my favourite book in my BC days, not simply before Christ but before Chesterton. I touch upon this in a chapter in Race with the Devil. My favourite non-fiction book, BC, was probably The Gulag Archipelago by Solzhenitsyn. My favourite work of fiction was Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four. Other more obscure books that were influential and great favourites, BC, were Nemesis by Douglas Reed, a biography of the anti-Nazi “Nazi”, Otto Strasser, and two books by Strasser himself, Germany Tomorrow and Hitler and I. I also read Schumacher’s Small is Beautiful BC and another book of de facto distributism by John Seymour, entitled Bring Me My Bow. The books by Strasser, Schumacher and Seymour paved the way before Chesterton (BC) for the annunciation of distributism (AD), which led me on the path to Christ and His Church.
