I have long been an admirer of Michael Coren ever since I read his excellent biography of G. K. Chesterton many years ago. Today he is better known to TV viewers in Canada as a longstanding and very popular talk show host. He is my age and was born only about three miles from where I was born in London’s East End. As teenagers, we took radically different positions. I became a white supremacist and a member of the British National Front. Michael became activie with the Marxist Left and joined deomnstrations opposing the National Front. It is even possible that we have shouted abuse or even hurled rocks at each other in those crazy days. Since then, we have both converted to Catholicism and have both written biographies of the great GKC. We have also both made the move across the Atlantic to make new lives for ourselves in the New World. Considering how much we have in common, it was a great pleasure for me to be a guest on his TV show tonight. Here’s the link to our discussion about Tolkien, The Hobbit and the new Peter Jackson movie:
I noticed you both said -‘conservative, in the proper sense of that word’.
I am staggered by the Conservative Party party here on ‘gay marriage’. They haven’t capitulated on it, the whole of the conservative part of the cabinet have thoroughly embraced it.
That’s the shock.
Oh dear…to hear Teresa May defending it.
And Boris Johnson-‘let’s whack gay marriage through’
The former Prime minister John Major is in favour, Michael Gove who I so used to like, George Osborne, The present Prime Minister ‘who would like to see gay marriage in church..’
George Osborne said something like-‘we must make the conservative party more electable by embacing it’.
I was going to end this by saying that you both made the right decision to get out of this country of England. But it’s the same where you are I suppose.
But shocked that this has come so quickly. I thought a conservative cast of mind would be absolutely against it.
But no. Cameron-‘I am for gay marriage because I am a conservative’.
