As the father of Leo, an eleven-year-old boy with Down syndrome who is one of the greatest blessings in my life, I am horrified by the systematic genocide which exterminates ninety per cent of children with Down syndrome. And let’s emphasize the word “genocide”. The destruction of these children is the product of genetic testing. If the extra chromosome is detected the children are considered untermenschen, sub-humans to be killed at the whim of their parents.
With the shadow of this genocide in mind, I was greatly heartened by an article on the saintly scientist, Jéröme Lejeune, who dedicated himself to the protection of the unborn, having discovered the extra chromosome which distinguishes children with Down’s from the rest of us.
As the wicked world bathes in the blood of the innocents it has massacred, the goodness of Jéröme Lejeune shines forth as a candle of hope and love in the darkness.
I thought I was beyond the shock that our fallen world could deliver these days until I read these ghastly statistics on Downs Syndrome children. What an affront to Our Creator!
The work and witness of Dr. Lejeune remains a beacon of light and hope and he no doubt is now bathing in the eternal light, a reward far beyond the feeble crumbs of a worldly Nobel Prize.
For those of us here in the Church Militant it is in the glimpse of a special child like your beloved Leo that we most clearly see the face of Christ on earth.
