What do the seventeenth century Puritans have in common with the fascists of twenty-first century feminism? The answer is that both brands of totalitarianism believe that Shakespeare needs to be censored. The old-style of tyrant sought to silence Shakespeare’s Catholicism by simply banning his plays, the new type, as epitomized by the new director of London’s Globe Theatre, seek to silence him by tampering with his plays to warp their meaning. Why anyone should have the sheer arrogance to think that they can “improve” Shakespeare is astonishing, the fact that they should do so for political reasons is simply pitiful.
