I am delighted to announce that Thomas More College, at which I am honoured to be the writer in residence, has earned a place amongst the top two per cent of American colleges. The coveted accolade has been awarded to the College by the American Council of Trustees and Alumni, which evaluated the curricula of more than 1,000 American colleges and universities. Here’s the text of the letter sent to William Fahey, President of Thomas More College, by Michael B. Poliakoff of the American Council of Trustees and Alumni:

Dear President Fahey,

On behalf of the American Council of Trustees and Alumni, I would like to offer the Thomas More College of Liberal Arts our enthusiastic congratulations. Of the more than 1,000 colleges and universities whose general education curricula ACTA evaluated in our What Will They Learn?™ project (www.WhatWillTheyLearn.com), fewer than 2% earned an “A” rating. Your “A” grade signifies that your institution has distinguished itself by its efforts to ensure that students graduate with the knowledge and skills needed to be effective workers, engaged citizens, and lifelong learners.  Your school’s “A” rating is a sign of truly outstanding commitment to student success.

The message of the What Will They Learn?™ project has, not surprisingly, resonated with policy and opinion makers, including William McGurn of the Wall Street Journal and Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Kathleen Parker. Most important, you will find attached an electronic copy of ACTA’s seal of excellence, with our warm invitation to display it proudly. We hope that you will place it on the general education section of your website, and affix it to the chapter of your course catalog that describes degree requirements. For upholding such high standards of general education, your academic program deserves the highest recognition.

Established in 1995, the American Council of Trustees and Alumni is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering excellence and accountability in colleges and universities. We serve as a resource for boards of trustees, alumni, students, and parents on various issues related to higher education.

Thank you for your continuing service to American higher education.

All the best,

Michael B. Poliakoff, Ph.D.
