A friend has sent me this wonderful interview with Evelyn Waugh, given in 1960. As expected, Waugh, at his witty best, made me laugh out loud on a couple of occasions, and, at his irritable and irritating worst, made me physically cringe in embarrassment.
There’s one particularly ticklish interview with Waugh in his “Collected Essays, Articles and Reviews” where he is sitting face to face with a Swedish reporter who is apparently convinced that “Waugh” is pronounced “Wog”, and who also believes that her EW is “one of the English language’s greatest satyrs.” Riotous.
